Did you know there were three different Tripods in the 2005 War of the Worlds movie?

OK, first why bring this up? The movie was over five years ago. Well I am one of the few that liked the movie. Yes it had a terrible storyline but the tripods were really cool.

Tripod emerging through the fire at the battle on the hill.

So what am I talking about, three different tripod designs in the movie? Yes there were three different designs.

The first design of course is the first tripod we see, coming up from underground and reeking havoc on New Jersey. The second design is seen during the military attack on the hill near the farmhouse.

OK I’ve seen the movie, you are saying to yourself, and its a tripod, they all look the same.

Go back to the scene with the military attack and look closer. As the tripod emerges through the fire one big difference can be seen. It has five headlights.

The first tripod seen at the beginning of the movie only has three headlights. One large light in the center, a smaller light to the right and one to the left of the main light. The tripod emerging through the fire has one large main light and two smaller lights to the left and two more on the right of the main light. You will get a better view a few seconds later when the shot widens and you can see the tripods advancing over the hill. Also the head of this tripod is bigger.

So what is the third design?

Tom Cruise’s character hides behind a building as a tripod walks passed.

The third tripod design has the baskets hanging under them.

They all have baskets! You are probably thinking to yourself.

Nope.

Again let’s go back to the first tripod at the beginning of the movie. After the attack Tom Cruise’s character hides behind a building. As the tripod walks passed we get a profile shot and you can clearly see, no baskets. So the tripods with baskets are the third design.

So what do you think. Was Spielberg trying to create different types of tripods or are they all the same?

    I believe you!
i love this movie, and the tripods are awesome!
how did i figure out about differetnt types of tripods?
well, at the scene with the ferry under attack, there is a tripod coming out of the water.
This one seems te have a way bigger ´head´ the the one first emerging from the ground.

at the fight-at-the-hill scene, i also noticed the dual side lights on each sides.
So i thought there were two types of tripods:

Destroyers, having lasers and shields, but lack cages.
(2 lights on each side of the main light, and seem to be bigger.)

    Kidnappers (or whatever it is)
(1 light on each side of the main light, they do have cages, and the ´head seems smaller, or it has a different shape)

nice to see someone noticing this to! 😛

Yeah I noticed that some didn’t have baskets too, but I didn’t notice the 5 headlights
